Sustainability, a concept introduced precisely 30 years ago on 5 March 1980 with the publication of the World Conservation Strategy (IUCN-WWF-UNEP), is now rapidly becoming well-worn platitude.

For the security of life on Earth, it must be rescued and given renewed vigor and new meaning.

That will need for us to go back to basics and create clear, concise, communicable definitions for the word in a variety of contexts and for different purposes that synergise each other and persuade strongly enough to deliver the transformations we need in our understanding, attitudes and behaviour.

This forum is not solely for expressions of philosophy but even more for eliciting what precisely needs to be done by civilizations, by all sectors of society and by individuals to make the future a viable place for those who live in it.

Well known pre-requisites of Sustainability include:
  • Fulfillment of Basic Needs
  • Environmental Harmony
  • Social Equity and Justice
  • Clean and Inclusive Systems of Governance
  • Participative grassroots democracy
  • . . . And what else?
After having evolved the shortest possible complete list, the next step -- the subject for another Forum -- would be to identify for each category the verifiable indicators of progress and the practical steps needed to achieve it.
